FAQ
Frequently asked questions
How do I get to Kileleni?
Flights operate between Mafia Island and Dar es Salaam 3-4 times per day, depending on seasonal demand. There is also a ferry that departs Nyamasati, which is about 4 hours south of Dar by road, at the mouth of the Rufiji river.
Can you help with organizing safaris and other activities in Tanzania?
Definitely. We have decades of experience in the tourism business and partners throughout Tanzania and Zanzibar.
Is there access to a beach at your lodge?
Yes and no. If you’re looking for a hotel set on a wide, white sandy beach, Kileleni (indeed, Mafia Island!) might not be the place for you. We sit at the top of a rise on the west side of Mafia Island (hence the amazing sunsets), so the lodge is not “on the beach.” But guests can access the beach below the lodge via short trail that winds down the hill.
The beach is fronted by a mangrove, so while not ideal for swimming, it’s a great place for one of our kayaks. Like much of Tanzania and Zanzibar, the tides can be quite dramatic – so check with us for the best time for a paddle through the mangroves.
How do I go about booking activities around Mafia Island at Kileleni?
We work with a number of local third parties who offer excursions around the island, which we can organize in advance (on request) or on your arrival. You will settle the costs of excursions directly with the provider. Please remember that some excursions (e.g., snorkeling, scuba) will take place in the Marine Park which requires payment of a park entrance fee for each day spent there. The entrance fee must be paid by credit or debit card at the park entrance.
How far away is the Marine Park? The airport?
The Marine Park is a 30-minute drive from Kileleni, while the airport is only 10 minutes away. Airport transfers are included in our room rates, and our local partners generally handles transportation for excursions, which we will be happy to confirm for you. Any other transportation needs can be easily organized.
Is your hotel vegetarian friendly?
Absolutely. In fact, every meal includes a vegetarian option, and we’re working on improving our vegan game.
How about kids? Is Kileleni kid-friendly too?
Most definitely. We have reduced rates for children, and we can easily accommodate your entire family in our large guest houses. Our pool was designed as a space for families to play – or just relax -- and Chef Lateefa will have even the pickiest of your little eaters smiling.
