Dreaming of a unique Tanzanian escape at Kileleni on Mafia Island? We’ve put together answers to some of the most common questions we hear from travelers, so you can start planning your perfect island getaway with confidence.

How Do I Get to Kileleni?

Getting to Kileleni is part of the adventure! There are daily flights between Mafia Island and Dar es Salaam, operating 3–4 times per day depending on the season. If you’re up for a more scenic (and local) experience, there’s also a ferry departing from Nyamasati at the mouth of the Rufiji River — about a four-hour drive south of Dar es Salaam. Whether you prefer the quick hop or the slow cruise, we’re happy to help you plan the best route.

Can You Help Organize Safaris and Other Activities?

Absolutely! With decades of experience in the Tanzanian tourism industry, we have a trusted network of partners across Tanzania and Zanzibar. Whether you’re interested in a classic safari, a cultural experience, or something more off the beaten path, we can help craft the perfect itinerary for your time before or after your stay at Kileleni.

Is There Beach Access at the Lodge?

Yes — but it comes with a bit of character! Kileleni sits atop a scenic rise on the west side of Mafia Island, offering spectacular sunset views rather than sprawling white-sand beachfront. To reach the beach, you can take a short trail that winds down the hill.

The beach area fronts a mangrove, making it less ideal for swimming but perfect for a kayak paddle. Keep in mind that tides here can be quite dramatic, so we recommend checking with us for the best times to explore the mangroves.

How Can I Book Activities Around Mafia Island?

We work closely with local third-party providers to offer a wide range of excursions, from snorkeling and scuba diving to cultural tours and nature experiences. You can request to organize these activities in advance or book them upon arrival.

Please note: if you’re planning activities inside the Marine Park (like snorkeling or diving), you’ll need to pay a daily park entrance fee. This fee must be paid by credit or debit card at the park entrance.

How Far Is the Marine Park and the Airport?

The Marine Park is about a 30-minute drive from Kileleni, while the airport is a quick 10-minute trip. We include airport transfers in all room rates, and our local partners typically handle transportation for excursions. If you need help arranging any other transport, just let us know — we’re here to assist!

Is Kileleni Vegetarian Friendly?

Absolutely! Every meal at Kileleni includes a delicious vegetarian option, and we’re continually improving our vegan offerings. Whether you’re a committed herbivore or just enjoy fresh, plant-based meals, you’ll feel right at home at our table.

Is Kileleni Kid-Friendly?

Most definitely. We offer reduced rates for children, and our large guest houses can easily accommodate the whole family. Our pool is designed as a family-friendly space to splash, play, or simply relax. And when it comes to mealtime, Chef Lateefa knows just how to win over even the pickiest little eaters.
